Herb garden plants come in different forms just like the other types of plants. There are lot varieties of herbs and each one is different. Before deciding to have one of the different types of herb garden plant, you should at least have background knowledge of its proper use and how to take care of it. This article will help you to better understand types of herb garden plant and their proper usage.

Annuals like basil, cilantro, and summer savory cannot survive a frost and they need to be planted from a seed or a small plant every year unlike perennials like sage and winter savory which barely lives in cold temperature and grows every after a year. Those herb garden plants that form leaves in their first growing season and flowers and seed in the second season and eventually dies are known to be biennial herbs. Parsley, angelica, and caraway belong to this group and they should be sown in late spring directly into the garden. Prepare the soil first by working it to a fine structure and wet it slightly. Planting the seeds in shallow rows and firming the soil on top of them is recommended. It is advisable that fine seeds be planted in a mixture of sand to allow them to spread evenly. Covering the bed with wet burlap or paper allows moisture of soil during germination.

Herb garden plants are also grouped into the categories for which they are used. Culinary herbs are probably the most useful to herb gardeners. They have a huge range of different uses in cooking. Because of their strong flavors, herbs like chives, thyme, basil, sage, savory, and marjoram are generally used in small quantities to add flavor to different types of food. Parsley are extremely popular herb garden plants that are used mostly as a garnish. Aromatic herbs have pleasant smelling flowers or foliage. Oils from aromatic herbs like loyage, mint, and rosemary can be used to make different types of perfumes, toilet water, or other various scents. Parts of aromatic herb garden plants used intact can also be used in the home to scent linens or clothing. They can also be dried and made into potpourri which will enable them to be able to retain their aroma for a long period of time. Lavender and lemon verbenas are great herb garden plants to use for potpourri. Some herbs are also used for medicinal purposes. For centuries herbs have been thought to have the ability to cure the body. Present medical knowledge recognizes that some herb garden plants are beneficial to ones health, others are overrated. Herbs used for medicinal purposes should be used carefully. Some herb garden plants are harmless but others can be dangerous if eaten.

Some herb garden plants are not used for their flavor, power to heal or fragrance. Some herbs are also used for their beauty. Ornamental herbs have brightly colored flowers and foliage. Many have whitish or various light colored flowers like valerian which has crimson blossoms and borage and chicory which grow gorgeous blue flowers.

Herb garden plants are categorized with their uses but still some of them can be used in different purposes. Mint can be used either for cooking, tea, and pest control. Whatever purpose you have in herb plants, at least you have the right knowledge of their proper uses.

Plants or even herbs can be planted in different ways. They can be planted in a container and placed it inside the house or plant it directly in the soil of your garden. Growing herbs in a container is not as difficult as planting it outside the house. They all have the same growing requirements.

Not only growing herbs in container, in fact all plants need three main things in order to grow successfully; sunlight, soil and water. Herbs are no exception. Sunlight is the key to growing any type of plant including herbs whether they are grown indoors or in a garden.

If you plan growing herbs in container, you should place the herbs, either grown in a kitchen or other room in a south or west facing window to get the best kind of sunlight. Different types of herbs have different light requirements but, for the most part, all need a sunny location. Some home herb growers supplement the light source with grow lamps or fluorescent lamps.

Growing herbs in container also need a well drained, not too rich soil to grow in. Add two parts of sterilized potting soil with one part coarse sand or perlite for herbs that are grown in containers. You will also need about an inch of gravel at the bottom of each pot to ensure that the plant has good drainage. Growing herbs in container indoors can also be supplemented with one teaspoon of lime per 5-inch pot to ensure that the soil is sweet enough for the herbs. Growing herbs in container also needs water.

Misting the plants and moistening the pebbles will help to keep the herbs within humid conditions. Since they are being grown in containers they do need to have more water then herbs that are grown in a garden but, you should avoid getting the roots of the herbs drenched or soggy.

An advantage to growing herbs in a container is that you have the freedom to move them about as you please. Annual herbs can spend all of their time indoors but, perennial herbs do better if they were to be placed outside during the summer. Although all herbs should be brought inside before the first frost in order to avoid the loss of foliage.

This rule is over looked when it comes to mint, chives, and tarragon. These types of herbs will go into a rest period then form firmer and fresher growth after it is introduced to a light frost.

If you plan to grow herbs whether inside or outside the house, just be sure to place an extra effort to keep their good growth. Plants do have different kinds but they are all the same when it comes to their needs. Be aware on their different needs to have a good outcome.

With these tips I have given, you are now ready to grow your herbs in a container. Get started.

You have planted the herbs in your home herb garden and watched them grow and flourish. They are extremely useful in so many ways. But, using herbs from a home herb garden requires a little bit of work first.

Proper season and timing is a very important factor in harvesting your own herbs. Herbs are best harvested during dry season because fewer oils are produced by the herbs during wet season.

In harvesting, inspect for those damaged leaves and insects penetrating the plant. You should also get only a part of the plant and not the entire of it if you plan to harvest the herb. Remember not to take more than one third of the foliage of the plant because they need a huge amount of foliage to re-grow well. Upon harvesting the herbs, it does not mean that you have to use them at once but you can preserve them, keep it in the refrigerator for future use.

Typically owner of a home herb garden know that there are three ways to preserve their herbs for later use; drying, freezing, or preserving them in a medium like salt or vinegar. In order to dry herbs you need to bundle six to twelve stems together and remove any foliage near the base of the stems. You can secure the bundle with string. The home herb garden enthusiasts protect the bundle in a cool location away from sunlight. If you are looking to dry individual leaves you can place them on a screen or a rack.

Remember to turn them often in order for them to dry properly. Some people who owning a home herb garden have turned to using appliances like dehydrators, ovens or microwaves to dry herbs as well although these are less satisfactory ways.

Freezing herbs is a fairy simple way to preserve herbs. Cut the herbs into inch pieces and place on a baking sheet lined with wax paper. Once the herbs are frozen, you can place them together in a bag and store them in the freezer until use.

The third way to preserve herbs in home herb gardens is through a medium. For instance, you can cover herbs like chopped mint, basil or tarragon with vinegar and it will be preserved for several months. Or you can make a flavored salt to preserve herbs by alternating layers of fresh herbs between salt. When completely dry separate the brown herb from the flavored salt and store it in an airtight container.

If you are using the fresh herbs right away after it has been harvested, you should see to it that you wash it with a cool water and two tablespoons of salt because there is a possibility that insects are present in the herb and the salt will drive them away without damaging the plant. To dry the herb, remove it from the water and place them in a salad spinner.

Herbs have different types. They also have different uses, different proper ways on how to harvest them. Whatever herb you have in your own home herb garden, you should have the proper knowledge and background of it for them to be used and cared properly.
